NYC Subway Cyanide plot foiled. Homeland security cuts NYC funding 40%. NYC PATH Tunnel Bomb plot foiled. CIA ends its search for Bin Laden. These people suck.

The Bush Administration has once again run afoul of science--only, this time, the results of an experiment relate to them directly. Researchers at Princeton have found that, in a war simulation, "leaders" who were more confident of victory tended not to fare as well as their more modest peers.
If you caught Frontline's "The Dark Side" report last night, the parallels are pretty clear between the study and Cheney's march to war. But the worst news from the scientists' results? Our leaders tend to be more narcissistic anyway--meaning they're more likely to wage war and more likely to lose. Fuuuuuck.

This Thursday, June 15th, American Zeitgeist will premiere in New York City. Zeitgeist is the feature-length documentary that examines, through a variety of voices, the clash between the United States and radical Islam from our funding of "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan in the late seventies through the war in Iraq and the recent attacks in Europe. The premiere will be held at the Society for Ethical Culture at 7:15 pm, followed by a debate between Christopher Hitchens and Eric Margolis, two of the more prominent scholarly voices in the film. Free Beer will be provided by Brooklyn Brewery. Buy tickets here with discount code "zeitgeist11".
Why should you go? 1. I wrote the original music score, which include collaborations with Yungchen Lhamo, a renowned Tibetan singer. 2. It's a great film (read below the fold for why I believe this). 3. Free Beer. 4. Free Beer + Christopher Hitchens = July 4th fireworks a little early!

This is heartbreaking...soldiers are re-enlisting to keep their health insurance. Fuck me.
One of the best things about the military is that is gives benefits to
people right of high school that in most companies today would seem
"old fashioned." Insurance, housing allowances, training, college
tuition, retirement--it's a pretty great deal for someone without many
civilian prospects. Unfortunately, in today's economy, that describes a
lot of people, and there are two very dangerous wars being fought
right now. It's a really bullshit choice to have to make.
Welcome to Bush's America.

A really, really good explanation of what a "chickenhawk" is and why it's an appropriate term. One quote:
There is a goddam world of difference between asking a man to risk his life to defend the nation and waste his life proving a point.
Hell, yeah.

I am ridiculously pissed off by this. Some ass from the Veterans' Administration took home, on several disks, pretty much every single veterans' Social Security number, among other data. And, naturally, the data was stolen in a burglary. This affects my dad, all our family friends, and a number of my own friends. What a fucking idiot and what a bullshit, slipshod outfit the VA is for letting this happen. Fuck!

Those of you who attended might have noticed a very talented photographer taking photos at our wedding. After having seen his portraits of Katrina aftermath, I wasn't so surprised when he told me we'd have to wait a few weeks for some prints because he was in Iraq. Well, I hadn't heard from him in a while, so I googled his name and Iraq and found out that he was SHOT by snipers near Ramadi. He's alive but was shot twice in his leg and his injuries are no laughing matter. Apparently he was traveling with an Army brigade and one of the soldiers jumped in front of him to block further wounds. I just figured he'd be shooting gap toothed kids in rebuilt schools far away from the action. Oh wait, that's right, the action is everywhere. Julie continued to google and found a dailykos post pointing to Toby's Iraq Blog. Go there now. Moving stuff. This war sucks. 1 comments
