MediaI just had to repost this story I saw on Drudge about a new study out of the UK about how music downloading has affected our experience of music. It kind of rang true. I was just thinking about how simultaneously exciting and anticlimactic it was to be handed a leaked copy of the new Belle and Sebastien record a month before its release when I had been waiting with much anticipation to buy it. I will still purchase the record, but it's just not the same loading it into my iPod a month early rather than pulling the wrapper off and listening to it on my stereo with the liner notes out.

It is weird, isn't it? One thing I've noticed, though, is that my digital music collection is largely legal. This is mostly through Kelc's efforts over the course of several evenings ripping every CD we owned. Just the same, I feel I'm reacting to music differently than I did, say, 10 years ago when I just played CDs one after the other. I think it has a lot to do with the volume of music and the insane number of ways you can structure your listening now. Would you follow up Luscious Jaskon with Coldplay? Not on purpose, but my randomizing widget just did it. And it works, actually. I'm not sure if it's a matter of lack of emotional investment--it's just more like being passionate about different things. It also means people dig into genres deeper and more broadly than ever before. Like to hear New Yorkers play bluegrass? No problem, it's out there and it's got a lot of fans across the country.

Nobody said it was eeeeeasy. Sorry, still listening to the Coldplay.
